Mr. Oghenejabor who stated this, yesterday, in Warri while briefing newsmen on the visit of the committee to prisons in the state said the prosecution had discontinued the case against two of the inmates following the intervention of the group, while bail applications for the other nine were being pursued.
On the visit of the committee to Sapele Prisons, last Friday, he said that the CDHR has offered free legal services to another batch of 23 inmates and would pay the fine ordered by the court for three inmates already convicted by the court to enable them regain freedom.
They are Austin Duwa who was convicted for stealing and ordered to pay a fine of N5,000 by an Oghara magistrate court or face a one-year jail term; Ochuko Ekpo, convicted by a Sapele Magistrate Court for assault and to pay N20,000 fine or serve a jail term of two years; and Friday Akponowo, convicted by an Eku magistrate court for stealing with a fine of N20,000 or four years, six months imprisonment hanging on his neck.
He said that the condition of Sapele Prisons, especially the sewage system was very deplorable and called on the Federal, state and local governments to come to the aid of the inmates, as prisons was supposed to be a place for reform and not punishment for the inmates.
