The children, whose ages were between seven and 10 years, were reportedly coming from Sunday school when the incident happened.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the smugglers came into the country from Benin Republic, through Ijoun, a border town in Ogun State with six second hand vehicles.
Explaining how the accident occurred, an eyewitness, who gave his name as Sola Aderemi, said the smugglers, who were in a convoy, wanted to overtake a commercial bus but veered off the road and hit the children who were walking by the roadside.
According to the eyewitness, the children were hit by a Toyota Carina car around 5.00 p.m.
Youths in the area blocked the road and made a bonfire and smashed the windscreen of a Mercedes Benz car in the convoy and set the Toyota car on fire.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Olufemi Awoyale, could not be reached as at the time of filing this report.
