Robbers stab worker to death

Anthony Akpan, a worker with Samchase Nigeria Limited, a construction firm in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, owned by an Ibadan, Oyo State-based politician, was on Sunday night stabbed to death by people suspected to be armed robbers.

Adeolu Adeyemo, Ado-Ekiti - 17.07.2007

Nigerian Tribune investigations revealed that Akpan was also a night guard that watched over a hostel, a building owned by the former Deputy Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly before his death.

It was gathered that the deceased was in front of one of the shops when the robbers attacked him with knives and machets.

When the Nigerian Tribune visited the scene of the incident, it was discovered that Akpan’s hands were tied backward.

Speaking on the incident, one of the occupants of the rooms of the hostel, Mr. David Temidayo, described the attack as inhuman and called on police to rescue the inhabitants of the area from armed robbery attacks.

"We came out to check the nightguard at about 2.00 a.m after the robbers had left and we were shocked to see a pool of blood outside the shop, raising our fears that he might have been murdered with his corpse dumped inside the shop.”

In a similar development, a middle-aged woman said to be a beer parlour attendant was at the weekend killed by suspected thugs in Irona area of the state after a quarrel that ensued between them.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in the state, Mr Lateef Junaid, who confirmed the two incidents, affirmed that investigations would be carried out to bring the perpetrators to book.

He also revealed that those arrested in connection with the murder of the beer seller were now being interrogated by the police and that they would be charged to court.
