Fire razes mortuary, corpses roasted

THE mortuary section of the Jericho Nursing Home, Ibadan, Oyo State, was razed by fire in the early hours of Monday.

By Seye Adeniyi and Adeck Danlami - 17.07.2007

The fire, according to the Nigerian Tribune findings, consumed the corpses at the mortuary.

An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, told the Nigerian Tribune that the fire was caused by electric sparks from high voltage supply of power to the mortuary building when power was restored to the area by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

The eyewitness further told the Nigerian Tribune that power supply had not been stable in the area for the past few days, a situation which forced many residents of the area to resort to the use of power generating sets.

He said the fluctuating power supply to the area had caused damage to domestic appliances.

When the Nigerian Tribune visited the hospital, a top member of the hospital management refused to make any comment on the incident, saying workers in the hospital had been instructed not to grant any interview.

The officer, who also refused to mention his name, told the Nigerian Tribune that they were still awaiting the arrival of the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Prince Udom Ekpoudom, before they could talk about the incident.

The hospital gates were shut after the incident while members of the public making efforts to ascertain the condition of the bodies kept there were prevented from gaining entry into the hospital.
