Justice Kayode Oyewole has ordered a former chief of staff in the Nigerian Army, General Ishaya Bamaiyi, remanded in the custody of the State Security Service (SSS) pending the determination of his trial.

This followed the striking out of a motion on notice that was brought by Mr. Wahab Shittu, counsel for Bamaiyi in which he prayed the court to grant bail to his client.
General Bamaiyi, who has just returned to the country after months of medical treatment abroad, was seen within the court’s premises.
Other accused that were present in court were: James Danbaba, former commissioner of police in Lagos State; Col. Bala Jibrin Yakubu, former military administrator of Zamfara State; and Rabo Lawal, mobile police commander in Aso Rock during General Sani Abacha’s regime.
However, the third accused, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, was not in court and no reason was given for his absence.
It will be recalled that the five accused are standing trial for allegedly making an attempt on the life of the publisher of the Guardian newspapers, Mr. Alex Ibru.
Further hearing on the matter has been adjourned till July 31.
