WORLD CHESS OLYMPIAD: Nigeria shares honour with Angola
NIGERIA's Rosemary Amadasun's complacency in the female category of the ongoing 37th World Chess Olympiad gave Angola survival strength as both teams shared honour at the end of round six yesterday in Turin, Italy.
Amadasun failed to utilised her three pawns advantage to give her opponent a better position a rear come-back in a chess game of that magnitude.
Veteran star player, Edward-Rachael Dappa dismissed her opponent, Venancio Sandra just as Glewis Pauline Ikpa economically accepted a draw from Oliveria Engracia with no clear advantage from both players after 23 moves in a two Rooks end game.
In Dappa's game, she opened with her favourite Bf4 against Venancio's Queen's gambit decline but her opponent taken by surprise did not muster enough resistance in the unchartered water of Rachael's Bf4 offer.
The Nigerian prodigy nurtured her middle game advantage and with relentless pressure on Venancio's fragile position and brought the game to a ruthless conclusion on move 45.
However, in the male section, Nigeria returned from unimpressive show in the round three and four and bounced back into reckoning with a 3.5-0.5 demolition of Liechtenstein even as the tournament enters round seven today.
National Master, Adebayo Adegboyega, set the tone of a brilliant outing after playing the black side of Sicilian defence to overwhelm his opponent, Frick Renato after 43 moves.
The Nigerian, who is having his fourth Olympiad appearance equalised the black side of Sicilian defence after breaking into the opponent's area with d5 and thus had a slight initiative and this he slowly maintained into a bigger advantage, forcing his opponent to embark on a desperate but flawed sacrificial gamble, which was convincingly refuted by the Nigerian chess master.
In the other games, new arrival from United States (U.S.), Adedapo Adu, failed to take advantage of his mastery in Sicilian defence of Nardorf variation of bishop b3 when he accepted a draw from Fester Fabian on move 60 on board three just as International Master Odion Aikhoje dismissed Mann hart Marcel after 25 moves.
Fola Akintola under score his mastery in the middle game with a impressive beating for Guller Andras and thus gave Nigeria a cumulative 12 points at the end of round six.
Nigeria male team will take on International Braile Chess Association (IBCA), while the female team will square it up against Bolivia in round seven this evening.
