« WORLD CHESS OLYMPIAD: Nigeria shares honour with Angola | Main | DISGRACE! Amokachi, 3 players red carded »

International Friendly: Amokachi blames referee, as U-23 fall to S' Africa

THE Nigerian U-23 over the weekend lost their friendly match against host South Africa.

The match was characterised by what players and officials of the Dream Team described as biased officiating in which the Nigerian team coach and three players were red-carded.

Nigerian officials and players walked off the pitch just before halftime when they could not take it any more.

They were protesting the decision of referee, Peter Mabuza, to red-card defender Yusuf Mohammed and Coach Daniel Amokachi.

To make matters worse, Amokachi, a former player, showed supporters the

middle finger as he walked to the dressing room.

It took about 10 minutes to sort out the dispute and Nigeria finished the game with eight players after Apam Onyekachi was sent off for a hard tackle on Innocent Mdledle, and teammate Nasiru Salihu was punished for dissent.

Said an angry Amokachi to journalists: " I cannot believe he issued four red cards and seven bookings in a friendly game. His actions lacked merit and were totally unacceptable.

"But it was obvious right from the blast of the whistle that he wanted his people to win at all cost

" I am satisfied with the bunch of players we have at the moment. We made sure we gave everybody a chance to play.

"We should have more depth by the time we have the likes of Obafemi Martins, Mikel Obi and Taye Taiwo joining the team.

"I have to admit that a player like Matthew Olorunleke is a revelation. The boy really impressed me, and I hope he recovers fast from his injury," said Amokachi.

He also defended the 3-4-3 formation he introduced for the couple of friendly games, stressing that it was for the revival of Nigeria's attacking tradition.

"This formation is ideal because it emphasises wing play and will make us play like we used to."

In the opening minutes of the match, Nsofor Obinna came close to scoring. He dribbled past Mdledle inside the box, but his shot hit the side netting.

More attacks followed but the finishing was poor. Their dominance was illustrated by the three corner kicks they won in the opening five minutes.

Amaglug-glug took time to react to the early attacks but was dangerous in the 34th minute when Onyekachi had to clear Lerato Chabangu's curling goal-bound shot on the line.

Nigeria conceded a free kick on the edge of the box and Chabangu stood up to thump a curling shot past the wall. Onyekachi, however, was equal to the task with a clearing header.

Minutes later, Amaglug-glug defenders nearly allowed the visitors a soft goal when captain Robyn Johannes' clearance

rebounded off team-mate Thapelo Tshilo, almost beating keeper Lee Langenveldt.

Amaglug-glug were rewarded a minute before the break when man-of-the-match Graham King opened the scoring.

Lebohang Mokoena supplied a cross that landed in front of King, who unleashed a powerful drive that gave keeper Aiyenugba Dele no chance.

In the second half, Amaglug-glug created most of the chances. In the 56th minute, impressive midfielder, Masilo Modubi, sent a through pass to Chabangu, but the youngster ballooned his effort over the crossbar when laying it off for a screaming Mokoena seemed a better option.

Later, Mokoena was the guilty party as he took on one too many defender instead of testing Dele with a shot.

A minute before fulltime, a Nigerian defender hacked down King in the box and Mabuza had no hesitation in pointing to the spot for substitute striker Koena Mathopa to ensure the game for Amaglug-glug.

The decision was met with howls of protest, with Dele threatening to leave the pitch.

However, Mabuza stood firm as this

ill-tempered match drew to a close.
