Fresh crisis rocks cricket association
THE last may not have been heard about the seemingly intractable problems of the Nigerian Cricket Association (NCA), sequel to the purported elections of its principal officers held two weeks ago in Lagos.
It would be recalled that the Federal Ministry of Sports and Social Development had on May 11, 2006 at the auditorium of the National Institute for Sports supervised the elections of principal officers to the NCA Board exactly one year after a similar exercise had ended in a stalemate in Abuja.
But four members of the board have raised an alarm over an alleged manipulation of the electoral process, claiming that they were neither notified nor allowed to participate in the elections.
The four members include Chuma Anosike, the highest ranking Nigerian belonging to an international organ
of cricket; Jite Okoloko, who represents corporate sponsors; Jacob Onyechi, representing South-East zone; and Umar Abba Gana, from the North East zone.
According to a petition written to the Sports Minister, Samaila Sambawa, by the aggrieved members and signed by Anosike, a quorum couldn't have been formed with only five being bonafide members of the eight said to have turned up for the elections, while the remaining were labelled impostors.
The petition partly states: "There was no valid quorum of board members to conduct the elections on Thursday May 11,2006, based upon precedent, the notice given was
inadequate and appears to have been calculated to ensure that some board members should not participate in the election and at least 3 impostors presented as board members were allowed to participate in the electoral process."
Dipo Idowu, Kalada Iruenabere and Mohammed Bashir were alleged to be non-members of the 12-man NCA board but they allowed by officials of the sports ministry to take part in the elections in Lagos.
The petitioners urged the sports minister to use his good offices to investigate the purported elections and declare same null and void, adding that his decisive intervention would save the country from
further international ridicule.
The elections alleged to be fraught with
irregularities produced Kwesi Sagoe; Yahaya Okweya and Ewa Henshaw as chairman,1stvice chairman and 2nd vice-chairman respectively.
All were said to have been returned unopposed.
