"We most join hands to create a conducive atmosphere for a better Nigeria", he said.
Obasanjo also said Nigerians must nurture, appreciate and respect democracy. Commenting on democracy's sustainability, Obasanjo called on all Nigerians, irrespective of their religion, ethnicity and gender, to support and contribute to that purpose.
Obasanjo further enjoined Nigerians to stamp out all forms of violence from every society.
About leadership, Obasanjo called on politicians to open the door of power to youths and Nigerian women. To this end, he enjoined Nigerians to remain vigilant and continue working together. He said, "We have achieved a lot, and we will achieve more."
Finally, Obasanjo said, "We must nurture our nation to be among the best in the world."
Nigeria, the leading country in the African continent, gained its independence on October 1, 1960. From 1960 to 1965, the country began to witness a democratic government. However, in 1965 the military took over and continued ruling until 1979 when they handed over power to a democratically elected government.
In 1983, the military took over again and steered the country for sixteen years. On May 29, 1999, after a democratic election, the military handed power to a civilian government.
Nigerians have celebrated "Democracy Day" annually since 1999 to show appreciation for a new democratic era.
