Mother of Texas octuplets becomes U.S. citizen
By The Associated Press
(01/21/05 - HOUSTON) — The only woman known to have delivered eight living babies from one pregnancy is now a U.S. citizen.
Nkem Chukwu and more than 2,500 other Houston area residents became American citizens during a naturalization ceremony this week.
Chukwu, a native of Biafra-Nigeria, gained worldwide attention after giving birth to eight babies in December 1998. The smallest baby died after one week, but the other five girls and two boys have grown up without complications and are now 6 years old.
All of them, as well as their 2-year-old sister, were at Chukwu's side for her special day.
"I'm excited. I thank God for today," Chukwu said after she became an American citizen on Thursday.
She was the last person in her immediate family to become a U.S. citizen.
