2007: Riggers should write their will, says Buhari
Retired General Muhammadu Buhari has threatened that anyone who tries to rig next year’s elections or repeat the widely acknowledged fraud that denied him victory in 2003 will have to face dire consequences.
From Sani Babadoko
The presidential aspirant of the All Nigeria Peoples’ Party (ANPP) in the 2003 election, said: “whoever wants to rig the 2007 elect-ions should write his will because Nigerians will no longer accept the massive fraud that characterised the 2003 election.” He said this during a reception for a delegation of the Progressive Action Congress (PAC), led by its national chairman, Mr. Charles Agadenya Nwodo, who paid him a solidarity visit in Kaduna on Tuesday night. He said after the defeat of third term Nigerians must remain vigilant to ensure a free and fair election in 2007, if need be, defend their votes after casting their ballots
“If I may quote the fireb-rand lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, whoever wants to rig the 2007 elections should write his will because Nigerians will no longer accept the massive fraud that was the 2003 elections. “Nigerians should be able to have the moral confidence that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), will do its job ensure a free and fair election”, Buhari declared.
He said the on-going political realignment is a “natural development following the heroic defeat of the third term agenda” ruling out any collaboration between him and Vice President Atiku Abu-bakar and former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, both of who belong to the ruling Peoples Demo-cratic Party (PDP). He said: “Today, the PDP is divided into five factions while the Alliance for Democracy (AD) is non-existent.
The ANPP is the only party intact despite loosing two of its seven governors to the DPP and PDP. “I disown the reports that I am in any party other than the ANPP. The question of my going into any party and backing the Vice President does not arise at all.
That has not crossed my mind”. In his address, the PAC chairman, Mr Nwodo, said the visit was to initiate a good working relationship with General Buhari. He said: “In its desire to unearth a purposeful leadership for Nigeria, the PAC is willing to look beyond its party and work with progr-essives like Buhari.
“Our desire for a change to a purposeful leadership for our great country is why we are here today as progressives”, Nwodo added. In the PAC delegation were Malam Saliu Mustapha, the organizing secretary, Alhaji Abdulfatai Yusuf, the treasurer and Dr Sadeeq Abba, the political adviser to the chairman.
