Female lawmaker’s hugging dress stirs Assembly

MEMBERS of Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), halted proceedings for over two hours, yesterday and traded words over the dressing of a female member, Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, which some considered "indecent."

MANSUR OLADUNJOYE and OLUWAKEMI ADEKUNLE

Hon Tejuosho representing Mushin Constituency II, had entered the House chamber in a mini-shirt on a pair of body-hug trousers, that gave out her figures and curves, the sight which made most lawmakers to whistle aloud while others engaged in private discussions before the commencement of the proceedings.

First to call the attention of the House to the "improper dressing" of Hon Tejuosho was Hon, Kolawole Taiwo representing Ajeromi/Ifelodun Constituency I who accused the female lawmaker of not complying with the House’s dressing code which he recalled should be national attire.

He said: "Let me state that the Honourable member representing Mushin Constituency has run foul of the House rule on dressing code which states that members should put on national attire with or without agbada, but with a cap, for women who are wearing traditional attire, must adorn it with head tie.

"But if they decide to put on foreign attire, it must be with neck tie and jacket," Hon. Taiwo stated.

The gesture of approval expressed by other lawmakers, however, infuriated the women legislators who responded by accusing Hon Taiwo too of improper dressing, for not wearing cap on his traditional attire as instructed by the House dressing code.

Entreaties by other members to make Hon Tejuosho apologise were rebuffed as she accused them of being petty and uncivilised, saying" "What I am wearing is called French cut suit, I bought it from the store, it does not need coat or jacket on top. You are just being petty."

This enraged the legislators more as they threatened to relieve her of her principal position as the Deputy Chief Whip.

They further accused the female lawmaker of corrupting their decent frame of minds.
