Not yet time to celebrate

LAGOS State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday berated President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration for its failure to meet people’s aspiration, saying, Nigeria has no cause to celebrate democracy day.

Tinubu, who stated this while fielding questions from reporters at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos also dismissed recent United State’s report that Nigeria will break-up.

In his word: "We don’t have democracy yet. We have a semi kind of democratic regime. We don’t have the democracy, the type we fought for. There is no complete freedom of choice, no proper election to bring the right people into office.

"Our human rights record is extremely poor. We deliberately disobey court order. We have not adhered to the rule of law and this is a very dangerous trend. There is no freedom without the rule of law.

"All the tonic and necessary ingredients of democracy are not there, so there is no cause for celebration," Tinubu noted.

Decrying the high level of unemployment in the country, the Lagos State Governor also berated the judicial system for its doubt standard.

"We have double standard in the judicial system. We have all sorts of inequalities in the society. The law is only for the poor and could be broken by the powerful. We abuse law at will because we are powerful. So, any external prediction of doom is unfortunate but that is the reality on ground.

On what is stalling the Independent Power Project (IPP) planned by the state government, Tinubu pointed out that the project’s second phase is being frustrated by the Federal Government.

In his words, "The second phase of the IPP project is been frustrated by enemies of the society’s progress. The Federal Government frustrated investors who wanted to bring money for the project."
