The government has also floated clinics in the councils to run its community mental programme for the mentally deranged.

The state commissioner for health Dr Chidi Marume dropped these hints Tuesday at a ministerial press briefing to mark governor Achike Udenwa’s second term anniversary.

Dr. Marume disclosed that a total of 135 health centres have been earmarked for rehabilitation in the exercise with five centres in every local government council to be fully refurbished.

According to the commissioner, government has already given out composite equipment to the centres to enable them go into primary health care in addition to introducing health information management service in all the local councils.

He added that 27 motorcycles and 27 computers have been procured for information managers recruited for service.

The community mental programme of the government, he said is a programme that has remained very silent but has had far reaching effect in the state.

He explained that the programme was initiated by the government to catch people at early stage of their mental problem and treat them.

The commissioner used the forum to tell the people of the state whose relatives have mental illnesses to bring them to any of the available clinics for free treatment.
