Prosecute Balogun now, ANPP tells Obasanjo
Ndidi Okafor, Abuja
All Nigeria People痴 Party (ANPP) has called on President Olusegun Obasanjo not to drop the alleged charges of corruption and embezzlement of public funds against former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Tafa Balogun, insisting that "the Nigeria Police under Balogun was a haven of corruption."
The opposition party claimed that the alleged $7 million, traced to bank accounts linked to Balogun "was money belonging to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and must be brought back".
Stating the ANPP痴 position Deputy National Welfare Officer Alhaji Mohammed Murtala said the party would be in the forefront of demanding for the "prosecution of Mr. Balogun because what we are talking about here is public funds and there is an urgent need to get to the root of the matter and retrieve what belongs to Nigerians".
Alhaji Murtala said that the best option would be for "the president and the EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission) to drag Balogun to court now. The matter should not be swept under the carpet because it bothers on misappropriation".
He claimed that while Balogun presided over the Nigeria Police force "it was enveloped by corruption and majority of the police officers were not happy. You can see that our police men are not happy. It was under Balogun that they went on strike".
He advised the acting IGP Mr. Sunday Ehindero, to show "exemplary conduct in running the affairs of the police and ridding it of corrupt practices".
Balogun, according to the secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF Chief Ufot Ekaette had given notice of his retirement and immediately proceeded to his terminal leave.
However, there were allegations that Mr. Balogun had to leave upon discovery of $7 million allegedly traced to his foreign accounts.
Consequently, the ANPP through its national officer, Murtala has insisted that he should be prosecuted.
