More troubles for PDP
• SPP set to quit
ACHILLEUS UCHEGBU
PEOPLES Democratic Party (PDP), rocked by unending crisis and threat of Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) dumping it, is faced with yet another threat as progressive elements within it, under the aegis of Social Progressive Party (SPP), have announced willingness to quit the fold.
The progressive are unhappy that despite their contributions to the formation of PDP, the G34 led by former vice president, Dr. Alex Ekwueme and PDM led by vice president Atiku Abubakar, have hijacked the party to the benefit of its members only.
A leader of the SPP group, Dr. Ezikiel Izuogu told Daily Champion that despite the fact that only three groups, SPP, PDM and All Nigeria Congress (ANC) formed the PDP, G34, emerged from nowhere to hijack the party and eclipse others.
According to him, SPP had the largest grassroot followership, adding that such was the main consideration in giving chairmanship of PDP to the group at formation.
"Three parties came together to form the PDP. These were SPP, PDM and ANC of these three, SPP was the largest with the widest grassroot following, this explained why the first national chairmanship was conceded to this group", he said.
Dr. Izuogu who later contested the 2003 gubernatorial elections in Imo State under the platform of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) said progressive in the PDP have been marginalised and short changed with the PDM covering everything.
"Today, the G34 which had no group, fraudulently claims to have formed PDP. The truth must be told. They give no credit to those who laboured day and night at the constitutional conference to set up and fund the three parties which they conveniently used to form the PDP without so much as acknowledging this fact. Such is the way of Nigerian politics.
"Now they have marginalised the progressive who got shortcharged in the whole arrangement without getting anything. Atiku and his PDM covered everything in the (President Olusegun) Obasanjo regime", he said.
Stating that, "we want to reposition the progressive to get their due", Dr. Izuogu said "PDM was an offshoot of the conservativce northern block which (Gen. Shehu) Yar’adua formed when he had a procedural disagreement with northern leaders".
