Jan. 27, 2002 disaster: Tinubu expresses commitment to better crises management

FUNKE ODUWOLE

A memorial service was yesterday held by the Lagos State Government for the victims of the January 27, 2002 Ikeja Cantonment Bomb blast with Gov. Bola Tinubu reiterating his commitment to ensuring effective and proactive disaster management system.

The service which was held at the burial site of the victims at Oke Afa in Ejigbo local government area, was attended by some members of the state executive council and hundreds of Lagosians.

Speaking on the occasion, the governor who was represented by the Speaker, House of Assembly, Hon. Jokotola Pelumi, described the loss recorded in the bomb blast as "a monumental commotion that brought great pains to the entire nation and Lagos State in particular".

"As a government, we have not been content to simply relive this sad experience year after year. We are duty bound to honour the dead but this will become an empty ritual if we do not learn and apply the necessary lessons", Tinubu said.

The governor said his administration has consequently strengthened its institutional capacity to respond to emergency situations.

According to Tinubu the capacity of his administration to respond to emergencies is world class considering the massive investment in some schemes like Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Emergency Medical Services LASEMS) and the state Ambulance services LASAMBUS), adding that the upgrading of facilities in the state’s health institutions were all steps in the right direction.

Tinubu urged the Federal Government to also enhance the capacity of the states to provide more of such services through the enthronement of a true federal structure, noting that it is the most befitting testimonies to the memorial of the dead.

He urged the Federal Government not to renege on its promise and pledge not only to construct a barricade round the Oke - Afa canal but also to dredge the canal.

This he said,, would serve as a kind of protection for the people living in the area against inherent danger posed by the canal.

Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Chief Dele Ajomale, Said the state. Emergency Management Agency was specifically established to provide qualitative response to emergencies and disasters.

He enjoined the Federal Government and the oil conglomerates to always ensure safety and proper handling of their facilities that could pose threat to lives of the people.

The prayers were led by the Chief Imam of Alausa Central Mosque, Alhaji Abdulkareem Gafar while Rev. Ayo Okeremi was the presiding chaplain.
